Obedience/Disobedience (24+ references)
This topic is the foundation of being in God’s will or out of it. Throughout the novel, spiritual, emotional, and physical obedience is the biggest challenge for the main characters.
Forgiveness/Unforgiveness (13+ references)
This topic is brought up multiple times in the book from several aspects. The main aspects are God’s forgiveness towards us, our forgiveness towards one another, and forgiving ourselves.
Love (20+ references)
The topic of love is certainly a “hot topic” throughout the storyline. There is a tugging of emotions seen between the main characters that is portrayed to be more lustful than loving. Learning to love God, then yourself, then someone else should be the order to follow. However, in this story of love, life, and finding the will of God, order is not found until the end.
Sex (18+ references)
This topic is a touchy one. The relational scenes described in the story are written for the mature readers to not only relate to, but to see how deep the characters were in sin. For every sexual scene that is described, biblical correction follows.
Physical/ Sexual Abuse (10+ references)
The abuse that takes place, primarily with Lydea, the main female character, reveals a lot of what she endured and accepted. Many young ladies can relate to this character simply by this topic alone. It is presented in the book to bring awareness of such misfortunes and hardships.
Guidance (20+ references)
Jayden, the protagonist, speaks to God often for direction and guidance. Although he may hear from God doesn’t necessarily mean that he obeys God. From beginning to end, Jayden keeps the Lord has his guide throughout the story which results in God’s will being found at the end.
Disappointment (18+ references)
Throughout Liquid Sunshine, high expectations are put on God, people, and outcomes. Disappointment can only take place when expectations are not met. As a result of these disappointments, many unhealthy emotions begin to form.
Honesty & Truth (23+ references)
What is a relationship without honesty and truth? Possibly it isn’t a relationship at all. This story is filled with both, even the kind that breaks your heart in half when it is heard.
Fear (8+ references)
Several dynamics of fear are spoken of in this book. Two types being: fearing God with a reverence type of fear, and fearing your circumstance with an uncertainty type of fear.
Idolatry (10+ references)
The topic of idolatry is seen amongst the 3 main characters the most. They each seem to be “addicted” to the other, which causes God to be as far down on their priority list as 4 or 5. The abundance of things is also another subtle case of idolatry.
Accountability (5+ references)
This topic was something more so desired than received. Having an accountability partner in your relationships will keep you from making a lot of bad mistakes. Not having one will open the door to temptations and opportunities. Believe me, I know.
Security/Insecurity (14+ references)
So many of today’s relationships struggle with insecurity problems. A light has been shone on this “hot topic” and even allows yourself to see your own personal insecurities through the characters hearts and eyes.
Abortion (4+ references)
This topic is relative to many of today’s youth and young adults. This too is a touchy topic but it is certainly discussed amongst Jayden and Lydea, the two main characters that will keep you on an emotional roller coaster, turning the pages.
